Sources close to both companies have said that sports betting operator DraftKings will not be taking over Las Vegas Sands’ casino proposal for the Nassau Coliseum site in Uniondale, Nassau County, New York.

Sands pulled the plug on its part in the project on April 23, saying it was in the ‘process of securing an agreement with a third party to whom we can transact the opportunity to bid for a casino license on the Nassau Coliseum site.’

Whilst DraftKings is believed to have held discussions with Sands, a source for Newsday said: “There is no deal with between the companies nor will there be. DraftKings will not be taking over the Sands bid.”

Bids must be submitted by June 27. The project is still pushing to rezone the 72-acre site and the adjacent Marriott Hotel.

Michael Levoff, Senior Vice President at Sands, said: “Nassau County and Town of Hempstead residents have made clear they want and deserve a transformational project at the site of the Coliseum. No matter if the development includes a casino or not, putting new zoning in place that moves the site closer to redevelopment is an essential step toward realizing a beneficial project.”

Daniel Baker, the attorney representing Sands, added: “The company recognises that there is little time left before applications are due to the state on June 27 and it may not be possible.”
