Spain – Online gambling surpasses €1bn in December in Spain

The online gaming sector in Spain continues to grow according to the most recent report published by The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).

According to this year’s first report on Spain’s online gaming market, which was released this week (February 8), in the fourth quarter of 2016 there was both an increase in the GGR and in the total amount bet. December was a record month with Spaniards gambling over US1bn in the last thirty days of 2016. The report covers the period from the beginning of October until the end of December 2016.

The DGOJ reported that the total amount bet stood at €2,913.22m for the quarter an increase of 12.97 per cent over the third quarter and 19.91 per cent compared to the same quarter the previous year.
According to the latest report GGR for the quarter stood at €125.66m an increase of of 22.71 per cent compared to third quarter and an increase of 32.60 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2015. Meanwhile, the total amount of deposits during the quarter stood at €323.52m an increase of 14.41 per cent compared to the previous quarter and up 33.64 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2015.
The latest report also states that the total withdrawals also increased standing at €205.09m – 9.41 per cent more when compared to the same period last year and a 30.20 per cent increase compared to 2015.

Of the total amount bet sports betting came in first place with 43.82 per cent of the market share. Casino gaming came in second place with 41.17 per cent and poker came in third place standing at 14.27 per cent. Bingo accounted for 0.65 per cent of the total amount bet while betting on online competitions accounted for 0.10 per cent.

In terms of GGR and market share sports betting accounted for 55.52 per cent, casino gaming stood at 28.61 per cent, poker stood at 12.12 per cent, bingo 1.99 per cent while gaming via online competitions accounted for 1.76 per cent of the market.

Poker experienced a slight decrease in amounts bet -6.94 per cent compared to the previous quarter but an increase of GGR of plus 4.63 per cent. For online casinos the total amount bet increased by 53.96 per cent compared to the same period last year as did GGR which increased by 58.83 per cent (online slots were granted a licence to operate on June 2nd 2015).

Of the $1,199.49m gambled via online, roulette came in first place with €551.90m (46.01 per cent). Online slots came in second place with €432.78m (36.08 per cent). €214.66 was bet on Blackjack (17.90 percent) and €0.14m (0.001 per cent) was bet on Punto Banco.

Meanwhile GGR stood at €35.95m for online casinos. Online slots came in first place with €16.78m (46.67 per cent market share). Roulette came in second place with €12.77m (35.52 per cent). GGR for Blackjack stood at €6.40m (17.80 per cent) while GGR for Punto Banco stood at €3,544.53 (0.01 per cent).
