Spain – Spain’s online gaming revenue up 31 per cent

Spain’s online gaming increased by as much as 30.9 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016 increasing by €560m with an increased number of a licences and a huge jump in Live Dealer roulette helping drive in the increase.

Gross Gaming Revenue GGR for all games recorded an increase apart from cash poker. Live Roulette increased by 67.08 per cent, sports betting increased by 40.97 per cent and online slots by 58.25 per cent.

According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) Annual Review for 2017 the board granted 17 new online licenses, closed 271 illegal websites and issued fines for non-compliance amounting to €8.2m last year.

Compared to last year all verticals saw an increase apart from poker which remained more or less stable and competitions which decreased significantly.

According to the DGOJ, there are now 26 sports betting sites, 9 poker sites, 36 online casinos and 8 online bingo operators. Sports betting makes up 55.52 per cent of the market, online casino 30.7 per cent, poker 10.67 per cent, bingo 2.08 per cent and competitions make up the remaining 1.03 per cent. According to the report, the end of the year saw increased interest in sports betting licences. This was because in September, the DGOJ announced that it would soon begin to grant more licences and would begin to evaluate applications from operators in the near future. According to the new regulations published on December 12th, operators will be given a year to submit their applications in order to facilitate the entry of more companies into the growing online gaming sector while current operators will be allowed to expand their scope of activity.

Spain’s online gaming revenues fell to €160m in the first quarter of this year. According to a DGOJ report published in June GGR stood at €163.3m in the first quarter of the year a decrease of 5.69 per cent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 28.85 per cent in relation to the same period in 2017. Sports betting increased by 15.89 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2017 meaning that growth is decelerating as it increased 20.38 per cent in the first quarter of 2015, 30.33 per cent in 2016, and 20.48 per cent in 2017.

Meanwhile, according to the same report published in June the online casino sector showed the largest increase – 51.02 per cent year on year. The casino sector has been growing since 2015 with annual growth rates in the first quarter of 38 per cent in 2015; 105 per cent in 2016 and 49 per cent in 2017. Bingo also continued to grow increasing by 29.87 per cent year on year. GGR per vertical stood at €81.87m for sports betting accounting for over half of GGR (50.04 per cent). GGR for online casinos stood at €56.52m (34.55 per cent). For Poker it stood at €21.47m (13.12 per cent), €3.54m for bingo (2.16 per cent) and €0.2m for contests (0.12 per cent).
