Spain – Valencia workers union demands gambling premises be reopened

By - 9 April 2021

Valencia’s Union of Gaming Hall Workers (UTSAJU) wants the President of the Generalitat of Valencia, Ximo Puig, to reopen casinos, slot halls, bingo halls and sports betting locations saying they have been closed for 76 days ‘without any health justification.’

UTSAJU Spokesman, Vicente Contreras, said the futures of 2,500 employees were now at risk following two months of closures with no proof ‘that the closure of the premises is necessary and essential to control the pandemic , taking into account Furthermore, there are alternative restrictive measures that are less harmful to workers and that would serve the same purpose.’

“They [gambling facilities] are places in which there is not a large concentration of people and safety distances are imposed along with ventilation and air renewal of the premises, temperature taking the use of a mask. The disinfection of machines and tables can be guaranteed. after each use. No source of contagion has been detected in the rooms.”

The Councilor of the Valencia City Council for the Popular Party (PP) Paula Llobet said: “The decision to keep the gaming venues closed is not based on technical criteria. Before the last closure, inspections were carried out and compliance with all protocols was verified. The Valencia City Council has €97m in its account with a surplus of €45. You have to help maintain jobs because the longer they are closed, the more companies are in danger.”
