Sweden – Betway fined in Sweden for offering illegal bonuses

By - 15 December 2021

Spelinspektionen , the Swedish gaming regulator, has fined Betway SEK 100,000 for breaching bonusing rules.

Gaming companies with a Swedish license may only offer their customers bonuses at the first time of play. As Betway Limited had a 200 per cent match bonus marketing campaign, players have been able to take advantage of bonus offers more than once. According to Spelinspektionen, this constitutes an unauthorized bonus in the sense of the Gaming Act.

The Swedish Gambling Authority considers that there are mitigating circumstances in the case, including that the infringement took place over a short period of time and that Betway Limited has made correction as soon as they become aware of what occurred. All in all, this means that, in this case, the infringement is to be assessed as less serious and that a complaint may therefore be regarded as a sufficient intervention.
