Sweden – Committee on Cultural Affairs backs Swedish gambling bill

The Committee on Cultural Affairs has given its support to the Swedish draft gambling legislation.
The backing from the parliamentary committee was the latest step in the bills journey to become a law with a debate and final vote now expected this Thursday 7 June.
The committee has been scrutinizing the bill over the last month and its opinion was published last Friday.
The committee, which consists of members of parliament from the Swedish political parties, welcomed the proposal and rejected all six proposals for amendments to the bill.
The committee wrote: “This proposed reform is long-awaited. The proposal means that today’s outdated monopoly will be replaced by a modern legislation that will include the whole of the expanding gambling market. The aim is to create a gambling market with high consumer protection, high safety in the games and clear conditions for operating on the market through a licensing system where we open up the Swedish market for serious operators who want to take part and be responsible. Therefore, we close the system for actors that are not serious.”
The bill is still scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2019 but the Swedish gambling regulator will start accepting applications for online gambling licenses on 1 August 2018.
