Switzerland – Plan for casino in Sion faces opposition from football President

By - 11 February 2022

The President of Swiss football team FC Sion, Christian Constantin, has spoken out against the development of a casino in Sion in the Swiss canton of Valais.

Mr. Constantin is planning to build two casinos in the Saxon and Martigny-Croix in the Lower Valais and stressed that his opposition to the Sion casino was not due to competitive reasons.

“I opposed [the casino at] FC Sion because it is the only place where the club can develop on the Tourbillon site,” explained.

The site is currently used as a car park for spectators attending Valais football club games. The planning application for the casino was submitted by the Visper company VF Invest. The federal government is expected to make fundamental decisions in April 2022 with regard to the reallocation of casino licenses. In October 2023 it then plans to rule on the granting of the concessions.

Sion Mayor Philippe Varone has welcomed the casino plan. “The municipal council has assessed the project as being in line with its current zoning plan,” he said, adding that the planned casino was of ‘tax, economic and above all tourist interest.’
