Thailand – Thai Prime Minister wants to discuss legalising casinos in Thailand

By - 19 January 2021

The Bangkok Post has reported that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wants to debate legalising casinos in Thailand.

Underground gambling is common practice in Thailand with recent reports linking the spread of coronavirus to illegal gambling dens. There has also been a steady flow of Thai gambling spend leaving the country for casinos in Cambodian and Lao which border with Thailand.

The Prime Minister said, in his capacity as chairman of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), it was time to begin considering legalising gambling in Thailand. He has launched a 10-member committee charged with analysing state officials’ investigations into illegal casino operation.
