UK – Aspers at Westfield awards over £100,000 to local good causes

By - 17 October 2013

The Aspers Good Causes Fund set up by Aspers Casino and Newham Council to support community projects that help residents to build confidence and skills was opened earlier this year to any organisation working in the fields of education, art, dance, music, sport and the environment.

Nine projects successfully received awards amounting to over £100,000, including £16,000 awards to the Fight For Peace project and Stratford Circus organisation’s Every Child a Theatre Goer.
Sir Robin Wales Mayor of Newham said: “The Good Causes Fund is the latest benefit to our community which enables them to deliver a range of sustainable programmes and provide support where it is needed most. I would encourage any organisation based in the borough carrying out innovative work to apply. We’ll continue to work with Aspers to develop new ways to invest in the community and support local people.”
A second round of the programme is now open specifically for sports or environment projects. An additional £60,000 is available this year and the deadline for applications is Friday 15 November 2013. Organisations should be based in Newham and benefit residents. Projects submitted must demonstrate value for money; be inclusive and open to all; and help residents become more resilient.
Since opening in December 2011, the London Stratford casino has had exceptional results. Over 1m customers had visited Aspers at Westfield Stratford City by the December 2012 first birthday celebrations and the Aspers casino has become firmly established as one of the leading leisure and entertainment centres in London.
