Uruguay – Uruguay closes state-owned casinos and asks private casinos to follow suit

By - 29 March 2021

The Uruguayan government has closed all state casinos until April 12 and has asked private operators to do the same, following an increase in COVID-19 infection rates made worse by the identification of the P1 variant from Manaus, Brazil.

A new decree signed by ministers said: “The casinos dependent on the Ministry of Economy and Finance will remain closed until April 12, 2021. Private casinos are encouraged to comply with this provision.”

The National Association of State Casino Officials (Anfuce) said: “Not one casino in the country has caused an outbreak of COVID-19. This is due to the fact that we work with a strict sanitary protocol, which was agreed by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP).”
