By - 25 February 2021

Golden Nugget Hotels & Casinos has joined the race for a casino licence in Richmond, Virginia, with a proposal for the $400m Golden Nugget Richmond Hotel & Casino, located six miles from Downtown and 20 miles from Richmond International Airport.

The project would create over 1,200 jobs for the city, take 36 months to build and would cover 950,000-square-feet including a 93,000-square-foot casino with 1,900 slot machines, 92 table games, and eight poker tables.

Golden Nugget would provide several one-off charitable donations, including $60m to Richmond Public Schools, $10m to the Richmond Affordable Housing Trust Fund, $1m to Virginia Union University and $30,000 to the Metropolitan Business League.

The project will comprise a 177 luxury hotel rooms including 37 suites, a 16,000 square-foot events center and 1,500 seat concert venue, four retail outlets which will include local MBE participation, six signature restaurants, a Blue Martini lounge area for nightlife and live music and a one-of-a-kind H2O pool complex with lazy river and private cabanas.

Golden Nugget Hotels & Casinos said it was currently in discussion with multiple landowners and is preparing to evaluate sites owned by the City of Richmond Redevelopment Authority.

It joins competing proposals from The Pamunkey tribe, Bally’s Corp., Urban One and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, The Cordish Cos. and Wind Creek.

The city of Richmond will choose an operator this summer, after which residents will vote on whether to allow the development in a referendum on November 2.
