US – Hollywood Casino Charles Town launches sports betting in West Virginia

By - 3 September 2018

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races took the first sports bets in West Virginia over the weekend, just in time for college football season.

Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook, operated by William Hill US, generated $340,000 in bets on the first day. Charles Town Races is owned by Penn National Gaming. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann placed the first ceremonial bet, backing his former team to beat the Arizona Cardinals in the first NFL game next week. West Virginia has become the fifth state to allow sports betting.

Scott Saunders, Casino General Manager at Charles Town, said: “I’ve seen a lot of changes in my 26 years in the business. I never thought I’d see sports betting outside of the state of Nevada.”

The state’s four other casinos will launch sports books this autumn.
