US – Indiana approves mobile sports betting

By - 30 September 2019

The Indiana Gaming Commission has authorised the launch of mobile sports betting for the first time in the state. A Chicago-based gaming company has been given the green light to partner with French Lick Casino to conduct mobile sports betting from October 3rd.

The decision makes Indiana the seventh state in the US to offer mobile sports betting.

On Wednesday, gaming officials said that the firm had “substantially demonstrated” that its mobile sports wagering operation meets Indiana’s requirements, as reported by Indystar.

Although gaming officials hoped to launch mobile sports betting on September 1st, a two-tiered approach to rolling out sports gambling in the state which focused on retail betting first before shifting to mobile betting was never ruled out.

Online sports betting platforms will use geofencing technology to make sure bettors are in Indiana when placing bets. Bettors will also need to provide personal identifying information to create an account on a mobile sports betting platform, which may include part of their social security number, birth date, email address and a credit or debit card number to prove they are 21 years of age.

With bettors now able to place wagers from their mobile devices, the Indianapolis Business Journal recently confirmed that nearly all of the state’s casinos are planning to launch their own mobile gaming platforms following the Gaming Commission’s decision.
