US – International Centre for Sport Security CEO to co-chair Sports Betting USA

By - 8 November 2017

The sport industry dimension of the betting debate will be very much to the fore following confirmation that Emanuel Medeiros, founder and former CEO of the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) and currently CEO at the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) Insight, has accepted an invitation to chair the opening day of the inaugural Sports Betting USA Conference, which is being held across November 14 to 15, Convene, New York.

He will lead the first day of the Clarion Gaming organised conference alongside Katie Simmonds, who is Director of Sports Governance and Financial Integrity at ICSS Europe.

During his period at the EPFL, Emanuel Medeiros, led the common strategy on sports betting on the regulatory, integrity and commercial fronts. Following the so-called Hoytzer case that rocked German football in 2005 the EPFL played a pivotal role in implementing a series of measures, including the introduction of on-line early warning systems to detect irregular betting patterns that might indicate match-fixing attempts, codes of conduct as well as training and education programmes. In 2014 the EPFL alongside UEFA, ECA and FIFPro approved a joint Code of Conduct on Sports Betting Integrity.

In June 2014 he was appointed CEO covering both Europe and Latin America of the International Centre for Sport Security, (ICSS) a ground-breaking international organisation and global hub of expertise on sport security, safety and integrity. He is also co-founder and Coordinator of the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), the world’s largest independent coalition in the field of sports governance and integrity, bringing together more than 80 leading organisations and champions from the world of sport, government, international organisations, global business and civil society (www.siga-sport.com).

Ewa Bakun, Head of Insight and Intelligence at Clarion Gaming and the person responsible for the vision behind Sports Betting USA, said: “I am delighted to be able to confirm the involvement of Emanuel Medeiros and Katie Simmonds as joint chairs, overseeing the opening day of what is an historic event. It is essential that the sports betting debate is covered from all perspectives and the presence of Emanuel and Katie, with their knowledge of both sport and regulation will ensure that is the case.”

Sports Betting USA is the first event dedicated exclusively to the development of sports betting in the USA. Produced by the team at Clarion Gaming, Sports Betting USA will explore the legislative path to the repeal of PASPA; demystify misconceptions around sports integrity; outline data monetization strategies, fan engagement opportunities; new revenue streams for rights holders and present routes to a regulated market for operators wishing to add this vertical to their offer.
