US – Long Shot’s in Frederick launches sports betting

By - 21 November 2022

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) has issued a sports betting license to Long Shot’s, a restaurant and off-track betting venue in Frederick.

On Monday and Wednesday, 14 and 16 November, Long Shot’s and its operator partner Betfred completed two days of controlled demonstrations, during which guests participated in live wagering as Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff ensured the facility complied with all required procedures, and that its systems and revenue reporting controls functioned properly.

Long Shot’s in Frederick is among the 17 entities that were designated in Maryland’s sports wagering law to operate retail sportsbooks, pending a review of their operational readiness, and is the ninth facility to open. Sportsbooks at five of Maryland’s casinos opened in December 2021 (MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill; Live! Casino & Hotel in Hanover; Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore; Hollywood Casino in Perryville; and Ocean Downs Casino and Racetrack in Berlin). Three additional designated facilities opened previously in 2022 (Bingo World in Brooklyn Park on 1 August; Riverboat on the Potomac in Charles County on 8 September; and Greenmount Station in Hampstead on 28 October).

Two other entities that the law designated for retail sportsbooks have been found qualified by the MLGCC and have been awarded licenses by the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC): Chesapeake Gaming in Boonsboro and Maryland Stadium Sub in Landover. Both of those entities are completing facility construction or are working through operational requirements with Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff, and are expected to launch sports wagering operations in the near future.
