By - 17 October 2018

MGM Springfield, the new casino in Massachusetts owned by MGM Resorts, generated $27m in gaming revenue during the first full month of operation.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission confirmed the new casino got off to a flying start with its 2,550 slot machines earning $18m in gross revenues whilst its 120 tables generated $8.8m.

MGM Springfield President Michael Mathis described footfall at the property as being ‘solid’ with the casino’s GGR ‘on track’ with expectation.

“We are pleased with the solid visitor volume we experienced in September, our first full month of operations. Our hotel and restaurants continue to reflect impressive numbers of guests eager to experience what our new resort has to offer,” said Mr. Mathis,. “Visitors from across the region are responding well to the breadth of our overall entertainment strategy. Our financial performance is on track with our expectations, and we remain grateful for the ongoing support of the Springfield community.”

As a Category 1 resort casino, MGM Springfield is taxed at 25 per cent of its GGR meaning the new casino added $6.7m to state taxes.

The Gaming Commission also reported that Plainridge Park, a slot hall and horse racing track in Plainville, generated around $14m in September. The Penn National-owned property, which opened in 2015, is a Category 2 slots facility and is taxed at 49 per cent of its GGR.
