US – Mohegan Sun backed to the hilt in Revere

By - 27 February 2014

Mohegan Sun’s plan to develop a US$1.3bn resort casino called Mohegan Sun Massachusetts has been given the nod of approval by voters in Revere.

Mohegan Sun Massachusetts will feature over 170,000 square feet of floor space and 5,000 gaming positions, including 4,000 slot machines, 100 table games such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette and craps, and 20 poker tables. Hotel facilities include a main casino hotel and a boutique hotel that together total 500 rooms and reflect the breadth of the overall resort entertainment experience.

Mohegan’s blueprint will compete with Wynn Resorts for the sole eastern Massachusetts resort casino license, who has proposed a $1.6bn resort casino in Everett, three miles from the Revere site.

Mitchell Etess, CEO of Mohegan Sun Tribal Gaming Authority, said: “We’re going to win this license because our application to Massachusetts is unconditional. We are ready to go. People in Revere really have spoken here. They really let their voice be heard. We are excited about our chances to win the Boston. We believe that our proposal makes the most sense for the Commonwealth and we really hope that we’re able to win that group of license in greater Boston and we feel really good about it. We’re still looking at May, end of May as far as the award of the license goes.”

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will decide which of the projects will be developed.

In November, voters in Revere approved an earlier proposal by Mohegan at the Suffolk Downs racetrack on the Boston-Revere line; however voters in East Boston rejected it. The new plan sees the casino to being developed entirely in Revere, on land owned by Suffolk Downs.
