US – Mohegan’s casinos generate $5.2bn in economic activity

By - 26 October 2022

Mohegan, a world renowned entertainment and gaming entity, has announced that its North America properties generated a total of $5.2bn in local economic activity over a one-year period, according to the brand’s first-ever Economic Impact Report.

Analyzing data for 2019 (the most recent representative year), the report details Mohegan’s significant, positive impact on employment, household income, direct visitor spending, as well as state and local tax support. Mohegan commissioned Oxford Economics, the world’s foremost independent economic advisory firm, to conduct the study.

The analysis utilized a widely recognized approach to determining economic impact and examined all Mohegan properties in operation in 2019: Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut; Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre; ilani Casino Resort in Ridgefield, Washington; Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

“Mohegan is deeply-rooted in supporting the communities in which we operate and serve, and this new report makes clear the true scale of that impact across our critical partnerships, charitable giving, sustainability initiatives, funding infrastructure, and direct contributions to state and local government revenues,” said James Gessner Jr., Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe. “We are guided by our core values and our centuries-old philosophy, ‘Spirit of Aquai’ – living the importance of cultivating productive and long-term relationships. This study demonstrates the important benefits of those relationships.”

The $5.2 billion in economic activity includes the creation of nearly 35,000 total jobs. More than $2.7bn in revenues have been generated onsite and off-property by the 15.7 million visitors to US/Canada-based Mohegan destinations in 2019.

This led to $759.3m being paid in state and local taxes, including gaming contributions, supported by Mohegan.

“We’re gratified that our continued success has a positive impact on local businesses and the surrounding communities,” said Ray Pineault, President & CEO of Mohegan. “Our success is a credit to the one-of-a-kind entertainment and experience that our team members provide at each property. As we continue to expand into new locations, including Las Vegas and Korea, we look forward to continuing to contribute to the prosperity of the communities in which we live and serve.”

“I am proud to have Mohegan as my operating partner over the past ten years,” said Morris Bailey, owner, Resorts Casino Hotel. “Our collective passion for delivering an exceptional service and product in a city that means so much to me personally is very special. My family and I are dedicated to being a positive partner with the residents of Atlantic City and the state of New Jersey to ensure that we provide opportunities for prosperity for all those that are interested in working at Resorts. Our financial commitment to the city has never been greater and we look forward to working with all stake holders to ensure Atlantic City remains one of the East Coast’s premier destinations.”

“As a native of Atlantic City, I am proud to lead the team members at Resorts Casino Hotel after 44 years in operation,” said Mark Giannantonio, Resorts Casino Hotel President and CEO. “Resorts is a gaming and entertainment industry leader. We are a family run business, and it shows; our team members dedication and genuine, exceptional service is apparent when people make their first contact with our property. I am most proud of our continued commitment to the many social programs throughout Atlantic City. Our partnership with the Community Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club, Jewish Family Services and Avanzar’ Woman Shelter are just a few examples of our company and team members support of those in our community in need of a helping hand.”
