By - 11 January 2022

New York’s online and mobile sports betting sector took just half a day to be crowned the top sports betting market in the US with Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers, bringing in geolocation volumes of 5.8m.

The first 12 hours was more than double the 2.3m GeoLocation volume produced by second-place state Pennsylvania. The weekend as a whole brought in 17.2m.

Lindsay Slader, Managing Director of Gaming at GeoComply said: “In just 12 hours, New York has become the top state for sports betting in the US. A launch this size is historically unprecedented, with volumes eclipsing the second closest ranked state, PA, by approx 2.5 times. Congratulations to our customers and the New York State Gaming Commission for the fast and furious start.”

Despite its app shutting down for a few hours, Caesars took in just under 1m bets over the first weekend.

Caesars CEO Thomas Reeg said: “The numbers were massive. We had almost a million individual bets taken. We knew New York sports bettors were a passionate group. They didn’t disappoint this weekend.”

BetRivers gave some impressive data with $970,381 being placed in bets on the first Saturday via its sportsbook in New York. American Football generated $500,231 of the bets, followed by basketball with $271,281.

DraftKings reported that 60 per cent of all bets were placed on the NFL, with 46 per cent of the overall handle going on NFL games. Nine of the 10 most bet sports teams were NFL teams. Five of the 10 most bet games were football games.
