By - 26 November 2018

William Hill has taken the first legal bet in Pennsylvania with Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, owned by Penn National, launching its sportsbook at the newly renovated theatre next to the Skybox Sports Bar over Thanksgiving Weekend.

Penn National Chief Executive Timothy Wilmott said: “Penn National is excited to be the first casino to offer sports wagering in Pennsylvania. The enthusiasm around sports betting has been growing since the federal ban was repealed in May, and we look forward to providing our patrons with another great amenity to enjoy at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course.”

Dan Ihm, General Manager at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, added: “We are extremely appreciative for the tireless effort and support of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). They moved heaven and earth to get us to this point and we couldn’t be more excited to be Pennsylvania’s first sports book.@

The landmark wager in Pennsylvania follows sports betting launches in Delaware, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico and West Virginia.

Pennsylvania could be worth up to $12bn a year according to Eilers & Krejcik Gaming. Parx Casino will open a sports book by the end of the year with its partner Kambi whilst Harrah’s Philadelphia, Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, SugarHouse Casino and Valley Forge have all applied for a betting licence at a cost of $10m. Bets are subject to a 36 per cent tax rate.
