US – Pennsylvania’s casinos set new record revenue

By - 3 October 2022

Pennsylvania’s casinos hit new heights last year with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) confirming record revenue of $3.3bn during 2021-2022beating the previous best of $3.2bn in 2018/2019 with two new casinos opening over the year.

Slot revenue came in at $2.4bn, generating tax revenue of $1.2bn whilst table revenue came in at $1.01bn, resulting in $163m in tax revenue.

Online gaming revenue increased by 37 per cent to $1.2bn, up from $897m generating $861m in tax revenue. There were 19 online gaming websites in the state with Betway and PointsBet being the latest operators to join the internet wagering landscape in Pennsylvania.

Sports betting generated $7bn at 18 retail sport books and 14 online sites. Retail’s handle of $532m was eclipsed by $6.5bn of online bets.

Board Chair Denise J. Smyler said she was ‘excited about what legal gaming is currently producing for the Commonwealth.’

“I am pleased to report that gaming is indeed fulfilling those promises,” she said. “During the 2021-2022 Fiscal Year, total tax revenue from gaming regulated by the PGCB reached $2bn for the first time. Casinos and gaming are providing family-sustaining jobs at locations spread throughout the Commonwealth. At the end of the fiscal year, nearly 15,000 individuals were employed in the industry, 40 per cent of which represent racial minorities. The industry also is responsible for sustaining revenue and jobs for many other companies through its purchase of goods and services.”

Kevin O’Toole, Executive Director of the Board, said: “The opening of Hollywood Casino York and Hollywood Casino Morgantown brings to 16 the number of casinos operating in the Commonwealth. Additionally, there was growth in the number of internet sites for casino-type games and sports wagering bringing the total of sites to 19 and 14 respectively at the close of the fiscal year.”

More casinos will open with Parx Casino Shippensburg to become the third Mini-Casino in the state with a fourth Category 4 Mini-Casino in Cumberland County currently being built. The Parx casino will open with 500 slot machines and 48 electronic table game positions.
