By - 27 July 2020

The Santa Ana Star Casino Hotel in Bernalillo, New Mexico, is delaying its reopening date by a further 30 days in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision to extend the closure was made by the Governors of the Pueblo of Santa Ana and Tamaya Enterprises.

It was the first of tribal casino to shut its doors due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 15 with an initial 30 day closure.

Melanie Martinez, interim chairperson for Tamaya Enterprises, said: “Our tribal leaders are keenly aware the closing of the Star Casino creates a significant hardship for both our community members and employees due to the coronavirus. The decision to reopen will require us to see a more consistent and stable public health environment. We have spent decades building public trust and establishing ourselves as the leader in the state’s gaming industry and we wish to maintain our position.”

“We are committed to opening when we feel confident that the trends are headed in the right direction. We have created a comprehensive prevention plan and have made significant changes to our operation to function as safely as possible under these circumstances,” said John Cirrincione, Chief Executive Officer of Santa Ana Star Casino Hotel. “Although we are prepared internally, our decision to open will be based on local and regional science-based health data combined with the highest level of preparedness.”
