US – Third place Pennsylvania sets new records in December and for 2023

Pennsylvania slipped back into third place in terms of the top-earning gambling state in the US, despite setting a new record for gaming revenue last year bringing in a best-ever $5.69bn in 2023, giving record tax contributions for the year of $2.34bn.

The 2023 calendar year combined revenue figure reported by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board was $5,697,218,115. That saw the state fall behind New Jersey where gambling revenue reached an all-time high of $5.78bn, marginally overtaking the Keystone State.

Pennsylvania’s online gaming revenue for the year was up nearly 28 per cent at $1.74bn.¬†

Wind Creek Bethlehem remained in pole position in Pennsylvania for table games revenue for the year, totaling $241m in 2023, athough that fell one per cent from 2022. It was also second in terms of slot revenue, totaling $285m, up 4.8 per cent over 2022. Parx Casino in Bucks County continued to lead the way in slots revenue.

Records were also set at the end of the year with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board confirming that December 2023 revenue reached a new record of $534,215,808, marking a 12.5 per cent increase.

It surpassed the previous monthly best, set earlier in the year in March 2023, of $515,278,831. Online gaming reached $165,110,845, beating the PB set of $159,490,505 set in September 2023 whilst sports betting reached $72,506,446, seeing off the $63,674,326 set in November 2021.

Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia was the top earning casino in December Pennsylvania, generating $92.1m in GGR, up 42.7 per cent. Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Grantsville was second with GGR of $75.6m, pretty much the same as last December whilst Park Casino generated revenue of $57.4m, marking a December on December increase of 5.2 per cent.

The record $165.1m online gaming revenue was fuelled by Hollywood Casino at Penn National, with $60.9m, Valley Forge Casino Resort with $41.3m and Rivers Casino Philadelphia with $26.2m

Valley Forge Casino Resort was the top earner in terms of sports betting in December, which for the state as a whole came in at a record $72.5m. Valley Forge generated revenues $39.2m, followed by Hollywood Casino at the Meadows in Meadowlands with $19.2m and Hollywood Casino Morgantown with $3.6m.

Pennsylvania has 17 casinos, comprised of six racetrack casinos, five stand-alones, two resorts and four mini-casinos.
