US – Wynn renames Everett casino to Encore Boston Harbor

By - 30 April 2018

Wynn Resorts has dropped the Wynn name from its $2.5bn casino project in Everett, changing the Wynn Boston Harbor to Encore Boston Harbor.

Encore is already a brand used by Wynn Resorts for a hotel in Las Vegas.

The casino is expected to open in June 2019. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is reviewing whether Wynn Resorts still meets the state’s suitability standards following accusations of sexual misconduct from its former leader Steve Wynn.
Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox said: “The Wynn brand is strong, and I understand it, and I believe in it globally. I also understand the cultural sensitivity here. There is no business association with Steve Wynn. We’re a $20bn company and we’re the best in the business at what we do. So if Massachusetts wants five-star luxury, high-paying jobs in the business, we’re the company.”

Gina Scaramella, Executive Director of The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, said: “This is a positive step forward for the company and the Commonwealth, and it shows that we’ve reached a tipping point in how our culture responds to sexual harassment and assault. As we move forward, we expect to see continued efforts by business, community, and political leaders to advocate for the change needed to end workplace sexual harassment and assault,” she added. “The decision to distance the Everett casino from its parent company’s apparent failure to prevent sexual harassment and assault, and disassociating its brand from a name now linked in the public’s mind with those of Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Harvey Weinstein, and Larry Nassar is just the first of what we hope will be many steps to create a workplace in which all employees are safe.”
