Argentina – Mendoza sets up online regulatory body

By - 28 March 2023

The government of the province of Mendoza has created an Online Gaming Management department, which will work within the Provincial Institute of Games and Casinos (IPJyC). The announcement is seen as a step forward in opening up the market after the government of Mendoza approved online gambling back in 2020.

The news was published through Resolution No. 171 in the Official Gazette which incorporates the Online Gaming Management department into the IPJyC’s structure.

The new department will be responsible for controlling online gambling and cracking down on illegal gambling throughout the province. It will also be responsible for preventing money laundering, promoting responsible gaming measures, putting in place player protection measures and protecting groups that are especially vulnerable to gambling addiction.

According to the resolution the new department will allow for a wide range of online games, allowing for online casino, sports betting, and esports. However online lottery games will not be permitted.

In October 2020, the government of Mendoza approved online gambling bill (Law 9,267). The bidders must be located in the province and unlicensed operators will be blocked through requests to the National Communications Agency (Ena. com). A minimum of two and a maximum of five licenses will be granted in all.
