Oakland Athletics breaks ground on Las Vegas ballpark
Oakland Athletics has broken ground on its new stadium being built at the former site of The Tropicana on the Las Vegas Strip, with the build expected to be complete in time for the opening day of the 2028 baseball season.
The ballpark will be joined by a brand new hotel casino resort, retail and entertainment complex being developed by Bally’s Corp., which owns the land.
A’s owner John Fisher said to the media: “Today is a celebration of the start of our construction process. It’s a dream come true for me. The A’s have needed a new home for a long time. To look out there and see all these machines and the holes that are being dug where home plate is going to be, it’s a really positive place for us to be. There are going to be thousands of people on this site.”
The $1.75bn stadium will hold 33,000 fans with views of the Las Vegas Strip, New York-New York Hotel & Casino and MGM Grand.
As reported by the Major League Basball, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said: “Vegas presented a real opportunity for Major League Baseball. It’s different than any other market in that the tourism here presents an opportunity that’s beyond what would be suggested by population or the kind of demographics we ordinarily look at.”
MGM Resorts International President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle highlighted that with T-Mobile Arena, Allegiant Stadium the A’s new stadium will form the ‘Golden Triangle of sports activity’ with over 6 million tickets available for sportsing events.
