Russia – Russian Prime Minister denies Sochi casino link

By - 15 January 2014

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has refuted a report that he backs the development of a gambling zone in Sochi, the Black Sea resort city that will host the Winter Olympics later this year.

Local newspapers claimed that Prime Minister Medvedev brought the subject up at a meeting looking at ways of offsetting losses for investors who have helped fund the US$ 50bn Sochi games; the most expensive Olympics of all time.

However, the Prime Minister’s office stated: “The premier did not suggest the idea of creating a gambling zone in Sochi. The idea was suggested by someone in the banking community. Some businessmen are obviously trying to give their ideas more weight by putting words into the premier’s mouth.”

Casinos were banned from Russia’s main cities in the summer of 2009 and banished to four remote gaming zones.
