The Mohegan Sun has announced a major retail expansion at the flagship property in Uncasville, Connecticut. The exciting new retail destination, coined The Downtown District, will be 200,000 sq. ft. of entertainment, shopping and dining. Located adjacent to the Winter Garage, construction on the new space will begin later this year and is scheduled to debut in early 2015.

Bruce Bozsum, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, said: “As the owners and operators of Mohegan Sun, the Tribal Council is extremely excited about bringing this new development to our reservation. In tune with the original vision of Chief Ralph Sturges when he conceived of Mohegan Sun, it will continue our mission to serve as a job builder for the residents of our region, and bring social improvements to the community at large.”

The project will be developed by a partnership of The Hampshire Companies and The Bronson Companies, two real estate entities with a long history of successful place-making and unique projects. The Hampshire Companies is a fully-integrated real estate firm and investment fund manager, with a diversified portfolio of 250+ properties in 28 states and over 23 million square feet of properties. The Bronson Companies is a California-based development company, with a specialisation in developing and redeveloping retail, entertainment, hospitality destinations. The company, founded by Richard Bronson, has a long-time history in Connecticut, as the original co-developer of CityPlace in Hartford and numerous properties throughout New England.

Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer for the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, added: “We are excited to be adding The Downtown District to Mohegan Sun here in Connecticut, as these attractions and brand names will add yet another layer to the already existing excitement and overall experience. The project is moving along nicely with financing already in place and tenant interest is strong.”

Among the project’s key features and participants are Taste of New England Gourmet Hall; a pavilion of artisan food purveyors from throughout the six-state region, Kings Bowl; over 20,000 square feet of upscale, retro-inspired bowling and dining and High Street Fashion; a spectacular promenade of retail shops.

“The Hampshire/Bronson teams are thrilled to bring this dynamic, new experience to life for

Mohegan Sun and the entire region,” explained Mark Rivers, President of The Bronson Companies and a Connecticut native son. “From farm-to-table to films, designer fashions to date night, the Downtown District will be an amenity to the resort and a daily destination for locals and visitors alike.”
