Vietnam – Only eight of Vietnam’s casinos are legal

By - 22 October 2015

Vietnam’s eight licensed casinos, catering only to foreigners, generated gaming revenues of US$61.56m in 2014.

The Institute of Regional Sustainable Development said that Vietnam’s legal gaming sector was made up of 64 lottery firms, eight legal casinos, and two sports betting company’s, who collectively contributed $15.13m to the stage budget.

It conceded though that a lot more illegal operators were generating huge profits from local players.
The country’s legal lottery operators generated around $3bn in earnings in 2014, and contributed around $1bn to the state coffers.

It highlighted that 200 illegal bookmakers were in operation in 18 cities. It also claimed that an average of 200 Vietnamese were crossing the border in Tay Ninh in the south to use Cambodia’s casinos with that number rising to 800 at the weekend.

“Cambodia’s gaming revenue is around $250m a year, and most of the punters are Vietnamese,” the institute said in its report.
