Argentina – Casino Union in Mendoza wants part of online profits

By - 10 April 2023

A casino workers union in the province of Mendoza has argued that workers should receive some form of payment from online gambling companies. Five companies will soon be operational and will be able to offer sports betting and online casino games.

According to the Martín Caín, head of the Secretario general de la Unión del Personal de Juegos y Casinos de Mendoza (General Secretary of the Union of Gaming and Casinos Personnel of Mendoza) Decree 1,318 of 2010 establishes a bonus for workers made up of 10 per cent of the gross profit from the exploitation of gambling in casinos and 4 per cent added to the gross profit of other games that are run by the Provincial Institute of Games and Casinos  (IPJyC) .

With the granting of licenses for online gaming, the union believes that workers should receive a percentage of the profits especially as online casinos will be able to offer live table games. In addition the growth of online gambling will have a significant impact on the sector as it could bring in younger players who do not visit land based casinos.

For the union, these gaming licenses will be part of a new branch of gaming that now comes under the control of the IPJyC and, as such, a percentage of the profits should be returned to the workers. So far, the union has not received a response.

The government of Mendoza awarded five online licenses to five groups, after receiving the endorsement of the State Prosecutor’s Office last week. The companies selected are recognized multinational brands, which have partnered up with operators already present in Mendoza.

Those selected were Impresora Internacional de Valores SAIC (Ivisa) and Hotelera Emprender SA (Super 7); Rush Street Interactive Latin America and Desarrollos Maipú SA (RushBet) ; Boldt SA and Fuente Mayor SA (Bplay); Traylon SA and Ondiss SA (BetWarrior) and Codere On Line Argentina SA which partnered in Mendoza with CELA SA (Sheraton Hotel). The results were published in the Official Gazette.
