Argentina – Tender launched for online gambling in Buenos Aires

By - 25 February 2020

According to the resolutions of Lottery of the City of Buenos Aires (LOTBA) published in the Official Gazette, the Lottery of the City of Buenos Aires has now opened the tender for online gaming operating companies that want to launch in the city limits.

There is no limit of permit holders and licences can be extended for a further five years.

The published regulations allow operators to offer a wide number of games including casino games. Interested parties must apply to LOTBA, and pay US$30,000 in administrative expenses when entering the system, and must also offer a guarantee of US$2,000,000 plus 10 per cent on net proceeds.

Online gambling sites should be operational in the last quarter of this year. Operators must be certified by an accredited gaming laboratory, meaning that LOTBA will put in place a “Registry of Certified Laboratories” in order to complete and provide transparency for the online sector. A strict advertising code will be imposed, as well as responsible gaming standards.

At the end of May the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires approved the final regulation of online gambling, which specifies that LOTBA will be the supervisory body over the industry.

Resolution No. 80/19 put forward by LOTBA was endorsed with the votes of the ruling bloc and the rejection of other parties, winning 34 votes in favour from the ruling party and 26 negative votes from other parties. The regulation covers “all online games of chance and / or skill, sports betting, virtual games and non-sporting events, made through the use of machines, instruments or supports, or any type or technology.”
