Belgium – Minister of Heritage classes Casino de Spa as a Belgian monument

By - 24 April 2023

Belgian Minister Valérie De Bue, in charge of Heritage, has classified the Casino de Spa in Wallonia complex as a monument. A protection zone is also established around the property to preserve the views and integrity of the complex.

The Minister of Heritage thus closes the procedure launched in December 2022.

Originally opening in 1763, the casino is one of the oldest in the world. The current casino, built in a neo-classical style from 1906 to 1929, has a complex structure, significant of the public architecture of the first third of the 20th century. It contributes, significantly, to the recognition of the City of Spa as a major spa town in Europe by UNESCO, alongside 10 other cities from 6 other countries).

“The Casino de Spa becomes the first casino still in operation classified in Wallonia. This classification is one of the many examples of our ambition to better protect the heritage of the XXTh century. Since 2020, 6 buildings of the XXTh centuries have been classified in Wallonia and two benefit from additional protection. A new dynamic is launched” said the Minister of Heritage, Valérie De Bue.
