Chile – Horse racing tracks take legal action against online operators

By - 19 June 2023

Club Hípico, the Valparaiso Sporting Club, and Hipódromo Chile have taken legal action against four online sites which offer bets on local horse racing competitions.

Among the companies denounced are Betsson, Coolbet and Betcris. The last named company is “Juega en Línea” based in Curaçao.

These and other companies according to the complaint “have been offering for several years, through online platforms, bets outside the law on races held at our racetracks, which has meant a significant impact on the horse riding activity in Chile, and in particular to the three appearing racetracks, which have seen part of their powers taken away by these illegal companies that, in addition, have illegitimately taken advantage of the live broadcast signals of the horse races held at the Santiago and Valparaíso racetracks,” says the complaint.

In their complaint, the racetracks also involved Transbank, a company that they blamed for “playing an essential role in this illegal operation, facilitating the means for bettors to pay using their cards and banking products from Red Compra and Webpay.” Transbank told local press that they have no contractual relationship with these sites, and said instead that that these online platforms operate through Payment Service Providers. In addition, the complaint requested that Amazon Web Services Chile report whether it maintained the sites on its servers.
