Germany – Berlin’s arcade industry to fall from 496 to 120 following Berlin Arcade Act

By - 25 June 2020

The Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Operations has announced that out of the 496 existing arcades that applied for permission to continue operating in 2016, only 120 arcades will be allowed in the future. All other existing arcades would have to close.

Georg Stecker, spokesman for the board of the Deutsche Automatenwirtschaft eV: said: “The Berlin Arcade Act is an economic stimulus program for the illegal market that determines the capital. At the same time, hundreds of state-licensed arcades fall victim to this law. We demand consistent enforcement against illegal providers and a strengthening of the legal offer. The best remedy for the black market is and remains an attractive legal offer. “
