Ireland – Irish government introduces interim legislation ahead of 2021 overhaul

By - 3 December 2020

Ireland has introduced an interim Gaming and Lotteries Act ahead of an overhaul of Irish gambling legislation in 2021.

The Gambling and Lotteries (Amendment) Act 2019 came into effect on December 1 and amends Ireland’s Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956-2013. It focuses on streamlining the application process for gambling and lottery licences, as well as the application process for smaller-scale gaming and lottery activity.

The Act is designed to protect underage individuals by setting a minimum age for participating in gambling services at 18 years of age and bolstering customer protection in the country, standardising measures for the digital age.

The Act also includes larger penalties for breaching gambling legislations’ provisions.
