Spain – Online market shows huge growth

According to the latest report published by The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) in Spain online gaming is on the rise with revenues increasing by 9.56 per cent during the first quarter of this year compared to the fourth quarter of 2015 and a very impressive 33.46 per cent compared to the same period last year. The results, which were released last Wednesday, revealed that Gross Gaming Revenue for the first quarter of 2016 stood at €102.3m compared to the fourth quarter of last year – an increase of 32.15 per cent year on year. Sport betting dominates the market with betting stakes standing at €1.3bn – 33 per cent more compared to last year when it stood at around €1bn.

Betting via online casinos stood at €899.31m a 89.89 per cent increase year on year while GGR stood at €25.04m an increase of 104.12 percent. Meanwhile betting on bingo increased by 10 per cent year on year and stood at €18.8m.

During the first quarter of 2016 betting via online casinos reported a 15.43 per cent increase compared to the last quarter. Sports betting increased by 12.28 per cent and bingo recorded an increase of 16.95 per cent. As expected poker was down by almost 8 per cent. In terms of GGR online casinos reported an increase of 10.62 per cent. Poker 1.59 per cent, sports betting 9.79 per cent, and bingo 6.6 per cent compared to the last quarter. The average number of active registered users during the first quarter stood at 550,452 marking an increase over the quarter of 6.84 per cent, and 40.05 per cent year on year.

Meanwhile sports betting, with 50 per cent of market share, dominated the market when it came to stakes. Poker accounted for 15.44 per cent of bets made. Casinos 33.79 per cent and bingo 0.71 per cent. In terms of GGR poker accounted for 14.45 per cent of market share. Casinos accounted for 24.47 per cent. Sports betting 57.32 per cent and bingo 2.16 per cent.

Online gaming has been permitted since May 2011 when Spain passed a new law regulating online gambling, and in June 2012 started granting its first licences to offshore operators. The new law paved the way for a wide number of games, including sports betting, poker and other casino games with a few exceptions, such as exchange betting and initially online slots both of which were finally permitted in June 2015.
