Switzerland – Schaffhausen to miss out on casino licence renewal

By - 24 April 2023

The casino in Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland looks set to lose its casino having failed to receive a new casino licence from the federal government.

At the beginning of 2024, the Federal Council will grant up to 23 new casino licences. 28 applications are currently being reviewed. However, it is already clear that no new concession will be granted in the Schaffhausen zone.

A total of 29 applications were received by the Federal Gaming Commission (SFGB). The submitted application for the Schaffhausen zone was not complete. The Federal Council therefore decided on Wednesday not to respond to this request.

According to the SFGB’s announcement, this decision cannot be challenged and the application for Schaffhausen cannot therefore be examined by the SFGB. If the concessions for 2025 to 2045 are distributed, the Federal Council could not grant a permit for Schaffhausen.

In Schaffhausen, the Swiss Casinos Group decided, according to information provided by the SFGB last November, not to submit an application for a licence and to apply for the new licence to be awarded in the Winterthur region. Private investors wanted to continue operating the casino in Schaffhausen.
