UK – Merkur Slots puts forward proposal for Derby city centre slot hall

By - 28 February 2024

Merkur Slots UK wants to transform a former bank in Derby city centre into a new adult gaming centre.

The German-based operator runs more than 700 casinos and slot halls across Europe and now wants to have a new site on St Peter’s Street where the former Santander bank was situated, along with its venue in the Cornmarket.

A spokesperson for Merkur Slots UK said: “The unit has been vacant since June 2023 and the change of use would not compromise the vitality and viability of the town centre. The introduction of an AGC (Adult Gaming Centre) at this location will be in place of a vacant unit, subsequently contributing to maintaining and enhancing the diverse economic mix within the centre.

“The nature of high streets has changed. Merkur AGCs attract people into centres, generate good levels of footfall, maintain high levels of pedestrian flow and generate linked trips. The proposal involves the bringing back of a vacant unit into beneficial/commercial use, which will trigger a number of economic benefits, and will allow an established operator within this part of the district centre to contribute to the centre.”

Santander closed its St Peter’s Street bank almost 12 months ago.
