Ukraine – Bill to allow gambling must still clear hurdle

By - 15 July 2020

The Ukraine Parliament has passed bill No. 2285-d in its second reading, allowing land-based casino gaming and online gambling in the country. However, while there’s a great deal of excitement in the press at this time stating that the bill is now law, that’s not actually the case.

The bill must still be signed by the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, before it becomes law. The formality of his signature has been complicated by long-term anti-gambling advocate, leader of the Ukrainian Union political party, Yulia Tymoshenko. Tymoshenko has tabled a parliamentary vote this Friday seeking to quash the bill before the president has the chance to sign it into law.

Should the bill survive the vote and pass into law, land-based casinos, online casinos, sports betting shops, slot machine halls, online poker, totalisator and lotteries will be reintroduced following the gambling ban instigated by Ukraine in 2009.
