US – Californian card room kick-starts hotel construction

By - 4 November 2013

California Governor Edmund Brown joined business leaders, community groups, hospitality and construction workers and elected officials at an event launching a new US$45m hotel construction project for The Bicycle Casino, which represents a significant economic turnaround in a region hit hard by the economic recession.

The launch event for the new 100-room, five star hotel, represents a significant new investment in construction and hospitality jobs in the mid-cities region of south Los Angeles County. It will also be the first world-class luxury hotel in the area and provide a boost for tourism and gaming.

The new Bicycle Casino Hotel is expected to bring 100s of jobs to Bell Gardens.

R.D. Olson Construction, who is leading the project, said construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2015.
Governor Brown and State Senator Ricardo Lara attended the ground breaking ceremony that started the construction of the Bicycle Casino Hotel in Bell Gardens. The hotel’s modern design will cater to casino and leisure guests alike. The seven-storey, 117,907 sq ft hotel will feature a bakery/cafe, restaurant, penthouse nightclub, roof-top open air gaming area, health spa, fitness centre and second floor, elevated swimming pool with cabanas. When complete, the casino and hotel will have more than 15,000 sq. ft. of event, meeting and function space.
The Bicycle Casino is currently the largest employer in Bell Gardens, and the 100-room, luxury hotel project will have a meaningful economic impact on the area, creating 250 new hotel and casino jobs. The 18-month development project will create 300 construction jobs. This job creation is significant considering the city currently has a 16.3 per cent unemployment rate.
Governor Brown said: “I know all these newsies in the background wonder why a governor of California is coming to the opening of a poker club. Well I’ll tell you why: I come from a long line of poker players. Private sector investments such as the one being made by The Bicycle Casino are a strong vote of confidence in our economic future and I applaud them for taking this step.”
