US – Pandemic axe falls on 2,500 jobs at Boyd Gaming
By Phil - 16 July 2020Boyd Gaming has been forced to make 25 per cent of its previously furloughed workforce in Nevada redundant, equating to at least 2,500 employees. The employees in the layoff are ones who were previously furloughed and not called back to work.
The company, who operates 29 gaming properties in ten states, said: “As was previously reported, in May we issued WARN Act letters advising certain team members of the possibility of layoffs in July. While we have been able to reopen most of our properties since that time, we are still facing significant restrictions on our business, and visitation levels remain well below pre-pandemic levels.”
Boyd’s said it was unable to give a full 60 days notice, citing the pandemic’s ‘sudden, unforeseeable and dramatic impact’ on business but said it would pay severance packages and extend health benefits at no cost through July 31.
