US – Racing returns to Plainridge Park Casino

By - 11 April 2023

Members of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) travelled to Plainridge Park Casino (PPC) Monday to join Plainridge Park Casino officials and other members of the horse racing community to watch the opening of racing season at the Plainville-based casino and racetrack.

The first post time of the season marks the beginning of a racing season that runs through 30 November with 108 days of racing scheduled.

Races will run Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, with the lone exception being Sunday, 23 July, which will be the date of the annual Spirit of Massachusetts Trot and Clara Barton Pace; the first post that day will begin at 2 p.m. Post times are otherwise scheduled for 4 p.m. through August and then will begin at 2 p.m. for September and October. Races are set to start at 1 p.m. in the month of November, however it is advised to check times directly with PPC.

“I’m thrilled to welcome a full season of live racing at Plainridge Park Casino,” said Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chair Cathy Judd-Stein. “Opening Day is a special occasion and a great opportunity for us to welcome back MGC’s seasonal staff of racing employees and show appreciation for the MGC and PPC employees who make racing operations run so smoothly.”

Opening Day kicks off seasonal employment for 20 Massachusetts Gaming Commission employees who are charged with ensuring the integrity and safety of racing operations at Plainridge Park Casino. Division of Racing employees are tasked with all aspects of race day regulation, including licensing, judging and managing the barn where blood samples from the horses are taken.

“We are delighted to see the horses back in action today at Plainridge,” said Massachusetts Gaming Comissions Director of Racing Dr. Alex Lightbown. “Through the purses they earn, a variety of jobs in the Commonwealth are supported and open space in in the state is preserved.”

Plainridge Park Casino is the only live horse racing track in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in operation – players can also place simulcast bets at Plainridge Park Casino.
