US – 2019 proves a record year for Detroit’s trio of casinos

By - 24 January 2020

Detroit’s three casinos; MotorCity Casino Hotel, MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown Casino-Hotel generated $1.454bn in revenue last year, beating the previous record set in 2018 by $10m.

MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino Hotel both enjoyed the best ever years.

MGM, which accounted for 43 per cent of the market, generated GGR of $623.5m, 0.7 per cent more than its record a year earlier. MotorCity finished second, accounting for 34 per cent of the total, generating $493.6m, an improvement of 0.8 per cent from its own.

Greektown’s share was therefore 23 per cent with revenue of $337.2m. That was up 0.6 per cent from the previous year but didn’t reach its record of $352.8m in 2011.

In December, Michigan became the 20th state in the states to approve sports betting with licenses costing $100,000. Tribal sportsbooks will be taxed at 8.4 per cent whilst Detroit’s commercial casino sports books will be taxed at 11.75 per cent.
