Chile – Lottery requests blocking of all online betting sites

By - 26 September 2023

Lottery operator La Polla Chilena de Beneficencia (Polla) has delivered a list of 1,200 online betting sites that they want to see blocked following a recent Supreme Court decision. According to the resolution issued earlier this month, these websites “carry out gambling activities within the borders of Chile, without legal authorization or from any national tax authority, which is why they are illegal according to national regulations.”

The request for the mass blocking of online betting sites was made by Polla president Macarena Carvallo, and by manager, Edmundo Dupré, to Undersecretary of Subtel Claudio Araya.

In their request, Polla stated that “the undersecretary has the main power and competence over compliance with the ruling that determines that these sites are illegal” and that, for this reason they were requesting “strict and complete compliance with the judicial resolution” that had initially ordered the blocking of 23 online betting houses.

In addition, Polla’s top executives informed the undersecretary of an initial registry of 1,200 illegal gaming sites operating online in Chile and which, they said made up only a part of the total. They also asked that a procedure be put in place that would block “the more than 1,000 illegal sites that we have detected.”

Last week Chile’s telecom regulator Subtel and internet providers in Chile agreed that they would abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court and would block access to online betting sites. The 23 web addresses correspond to 12 betting sites in all. The information was confirmed by Alfie Ulloa President of Chile Telcos (The Chilean Telecommunications Association). Telcos represents  Entel, GTD/Telefónica del Sur, Movistar, ClaroVTR and Mundo Pacífico.
