Colombia – Revenue for territorial games on the rise

Revenue for so called “territorial games” (juegos territoriales) are on the rise according to the gambling board Coljuegos and the Consejo Nacional de Juegos de Suerte y Azar (National Council for Games of Chance and Gambling). Territorial games encompass provincially run landbased lotteries, instant game Raspa y Listo (available in most provinces) and the popular lottery game Chance Game, which is run by a number of different operators.

According to statistics released by the board territorial games during 2023 generated sales totalling $3.591.589 trillion pesos (USD 919.7m). Of these, the Chance Game (also known as “apuestas permanentes” generated sales amounting to $2.388.376 trillion pesos (USD 611.6m) accounting for 66% of market share. This was followed by lottery games with sales of $854.662 billion pesos (USD 218.8m) with 24% of market share and finally, Raspa y Listo with sales of $348.550 billion pesos (USD 89.2m) – 10%.

These sales were 4% higher than those recorded in 2022 and allowed for the transfer of resources to healthcare amounting to $546.460 billion pesos (USD 140 million) and the sum of $453.791 billion pesos (USD 116.2 million) to the Colombian state in VAT.

Dr. Roberto Conde, Technical Secretary of the CNJSA also highlighted the steps the CNJSA had taken during the year to monitor the industry. According to the government official a total of 2023,35 surveillance visits were carried out to territorial operators of games of chance and gambling.

These visits were “aimed at strengthening the  presence of the CNJSA and generate preventive and corrective actions according to the results found, as well as to promote continuous improvement of processes and procedures for the operation of territorial games, aimed at increasing sales and transfers to the healthcare sector,” Coljuegos explained in a statement.
