Island venue operates with 200 slots, six tables and a nightclub
The Regional Government of Madeira has launched an international tender for the upcoming concession of the Casino da Madeira, which runs out on December 31.
It could bring an end to nearly six decades of continuous operation by the same group, Pestana, and will open up competition for the exclusive right to operate games of chance in the Funchal gaming zone.
Journal des Casinos revealed that Madeira’s Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture will oversee the tender. Interested operators must first demonstrate their financial stability, technical expertise, and operational experience before being invited to submit their financial and technical bids.
The current concessionaire, Sociedade de Investimentos Turísticos na Ilha da Madeira (ITI), a company owned by the Pestana Group, has operated the casino since 1986 and held the concession for the Funchal gaming zone since 1968; however, it will not benefit from an automatic extension. Instead, it will have to compete with new bidders if it wants to retain the concession beyond 2026. The Pestana Group also operates more than 95 hotels worldwide, along with 12 holiday resorts, six golf courses, three real estate developments, and two casinos. In addition to the Madeira location, its second gaming establishment is situated in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, 300 kilometres off the coast of Gabon.
Located on Avenida do Infante, just minutes from Funchal’s city centre, Casino da Madeira is one of the island’s key tourist and entertainment venues. It houses 200 slots, two blackjack tables, two poker tables, two American roulette tables, and an electronic roulette game. The facility also offers restaurants, bars, a convention centre, and a nightclub.
