The Joa casino completed the renovation of its Art Deco façade at the end of July
Casino JOA de Saint-Aubin, in the French region of Calvados, completed the renovation of its Art Deco façade at the end of July, coinciding with the establishment’s centenary.
Beginning last February, the project represents an investment of approximately €150,000, funded through a public service delegation agreement, according to the casino’s director, Stéphane Longo, contacted by the Journal des Casinos. An official inauguration is planned for the end of the month, with representatives from the local municipality in attendance.
The façade had not undergone a renovation of this scale since 1997. Originally composed of plywood panels, it was reworked using digital prints on aluminum. Several local artisans, notably from Caen and Ouistreham, participated in the project. The restoration highlighted the building’s Art Deco-inspired decorations and reliefs.
Longo said: “The residents of Saint-Aubin are very attached to the casino’s facade. They stop to look at it and thank us for renovating it.”
This work follows initial renovations carried out in 2025. A skylight and a glass roof were then installed on the first floor to bring more light into the restaurant, which is housed in a former nightclub. The heat pump and air conditioning system was also replaced.
The casino is celebrating the centenary of the current building this year. Its construction began in 1921 before its inauguration in the summer of 1926. Originally designed as a leisure venue including a ballroom, a theatre, gaming areas, a cinema and a restaurant, it has undergone several transformations over the decades.
The casino, whose public service delegation agreement ends in 2031, currently has 59 slot machines, seven electronic blackjack terminals, 11 electronic English roulette terminals, and two blackjack tables. The establishment also includes a cinema.
The Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer gaming establishment achieved a gross gaming revenue of €4.24m during the 2024-2025 financial year, placing it 154th in the ranking of French casinos.
