The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians says it will continue building its long-planned Madera casino resort despite a California Supreme Court decision not to review a lower court ruling against the project.
The decision leaves in place a Fresno appellate ruling that the casino lacks valid state authorisation, although the tribe maintains that its right to game on the site is governed exclusively by federal law.
North Fork said the land has been held in federal trust since 2012 and pointed to federal approvals granted in 2012 and 2016, along with court decisions upholding those approvals.
The project, which the tribe still expects to open this year, is planned to include more than 2,400 slot machines, 40 table games and eight dining venues, with local supporters positioning it as a major economic development engine for Madera County.
