Action relates to changes in the law approved in June 2025 that prevent offshore gambling operators from accepting bets from within New Zealand
Legal action has been launched in the High Court at Auckland against several gambling operators, including SkyCity, Super Group and Bet365, concerning their online gaming activity in New Zealand.
Justice Ian Gault will consider whether to bundle the cases under joint management, but has so far given the company filing the complaint anonymity. The potential class action claims are made under the Gambling Act, Financial Markets Conduct Act, the Contract and Commercial Law Act and the Fair Trading Act.
Whilst denying any wrongdoing, Sky City said: “SkyCity Entertainment Group advises that it has received notice of proceedings against SkyCity, SkyCity Auckland Holdings Limited and Silvereye Entertainment Limited (a third party based in Malta and licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority) (Silvereye) seeking to test the lawfulness of the online gaming operations operated by Silvereye on behalf of an overseas subsidiary of SkyCity. The proceedings include an application for leave to bring the proceedings as a funded class action in respect of gambling monies lost to SkyCity Online between February 2020 and February 2026. SkyCity denies any such liability and will actively defend the proceedings.”
Bet365 CEO Denise Coates is named in the case alongside Hillside Gaming ENC and Hillside Sports as is Super Group CEO Neal Menashe alongside Bayton, DigiMedia, Digamma, GM Gaming, Baytree Alderney, and Baytree Interactive.
