A draft masterplan for India’s Great Nicobar Island (which lies in the eastern Indian Ocean in the Bay of Bengal), has identified tourism as the central engine of future economic growth, with gaming tourism and a possible casino included within its proposed entertainment mix. The plan forms part of a wider 92,000 crore infrastructure project and envisages annual visitor arrivals exceeding one million by 2055, supported by an airport, port, township and tourism clusters.

Among the proposed tourism models are wellness, beach, nature, adventure and business tourism, alongside family entertainment hubs and gaming tourism. One draft map also points to the possible inclusion of a casino within the tourism and entertainment cluster. The proposal remains contentious, however, with legal challenges continuing over land rights, environmental approvals and the treatment of local Nicobarese tribal communities.
